Dance with the storm

SD: A ship in stormy waters with high waves and with clouds in the sky and rain, realistic, Digital Art, Colorful

After a few years of a pandemic, a war, supply chain disruptions, an energy crisis and rampant inflation that seemed to come from out of nowhere we really should be at the point where arguing for annual budgets and multi year projects should be considered flat out crazy.

The world one year from now will most likely be very different from today (hopefully better).

With budget season coming up think about how you can optimise for resilience and flexibility rather than locking up project plans and cognitive capacity years ahead.

We are not sailing in calm and predictable waters but rather in a storm of change. 2023 will not be like 2022. At all.

Act accordingly.

(How? A good way to start is to follow Bjarte Bogsnes and the Beyond Budgeting movement. Another is to start doing regular scenario betting sessions to exercise your probability muscles. A third is to list all your unspoken assumptions that need to be true for your plans to hold and get a critical eye on them.)

Dance with the storm, don’t just let it push you around.
